common tasks

Here are step-by-step instructions for completing common tasks:

basic tasks

For information about navigating through a document, see navigation.

document management tasks

open a document for viewing

With RediReader™, you can open any document that has an entry in the document list as well as any file located anywhere on a mounted external memory card. See
standard locations for information about the areas in which RediReader™ searches for documents to add to the document list.

open a listed document

To open a document with an entry in the document list, follow these steps:
  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Open to enter open mode.
  3. In the document list, tap the entry of the document you want to open. The document opens for viewing.

open an arbitrary file

To open a file located anywhere on a mounted external memory card, follow these steps:
  1. In the Tools menu, tap Open File. RediReader™ presents the Open File dialog.
  2. Select the Volume on which the document is located if it is not already selected.
  3. Navigate to the folder containing the file you want to open.
  4. Tap the name of a file to open it.
If the file is not one of the standard document types, then RediReader™ opens the file in text mode.

add a bookmark to a document

While viewing a document, you can bookmark the current location using a named bookmark so that you can easily jump back to the bookmarked location at any time by selecting the bookmark from a list of the bookmarks you have added to the document.

To add a bookmark to mark the current location in the document, follow these steps:

  1. In the Marks menu, tap Add Bookmark. RediReader™ presents the Add Bookmark dialog and suggests a name for the bookmark, the text of which is taken from the first text line currently at the top of the screen.
  2. In the Name field, modify or replace the suggested name with the name you want to give the bookmark.
  3. In the Type field, select Local if you want the bookmark stored on your device only or select Document if you want the bookmark stored with the document.
  4. Tap Add to add the bookmark or Cancel to not add it.
For more about bookmarks and using them, see
bookmarks.

Tip: In the case where you think you might beam a document to someone but you do not want the receiver to also receive the bookmarks you have set for the document, you can set Local bookmarks for the document rather than Document bookmarks. Since Local bookmarks are not stored in the document, whereas Document bookmarks are, when you beam a document, the Document bookmarks travel with the document to the receiver but the Local bookmarks do not.

search for text within a document

While viewing a document, you can search for text within the document either localized to the current page or through the entire document.

To search for text, follow these steps:

  1. On the tool bar, tap the Find icon . RediReader™ presents the Find dialog.
  2. In the Find field, enter the text you want to find.
  3. Check Match case if you want the search to be case-sensitive or uncheck it to make the search case-insensitive.
  4. Check Entire document to search the entire document or uncheck it to search only within the current page.
  5. In the Range field, select whether you want to search Down (e.g., forward), Up (e.g., backward), or from Top to Bottom.
  6. Tap Find to begin the search or Cancel to cancel.
While RediReader™ searches the document, it presents a progress dialog to show you how far it has searched within the search range and how far it needs to go. You can cancel the search at any time by tapping Cancel. The search stops as soon as RediReader™ finds an occurrence of the text to find or reaches the end of the search range.

If RediReader™ finds an occurrence of the text to find, it jumps to the location of the occurrence and highlights it. You can search for the next occurrence by tapping the Find Again icon on the tool bar.

copy text to the clipboard

In the document you are viewing, you can select text and copy it to the clipboard by following these steps:
  1. On the tool bar, tap the Copy Mode icon to enter copy mode.
  2. Drag your stylus across the range of text you want to copy. As you do so, the text highlights to show your selection. If you drag to the top or bottom of the screen, the text scrolls so that you can extend the selection.
  3. In the Edit menu, tap Copy to copy the selected text to the clipboard.

Tip: You can use the Copy Entire Screen, Copy Entire Page, and Copy Entire Document commands in the Edit menu to easily copy the entire screen, page, or document text without needing to either enter copy mode or manually select the text.

Note: The amount of text you can copy is limited by the amount of memory available and limitations on how much text the clipboard can hold.

categorize a document

When RediReader™ adds a new entry to the document list for a new document it finds, the entry by default goes to the Unfiled category unless the document specifies a
default category. You can group your documents into categories to make it easier for you to locate the document you want to open.

You can categorize documents from the document list view and you can categorize the current document you are viewing.

categorize a document you are reading

If you want to change the category of the document you are currently viewing, follow these steps:
  1. From the Edit menu, tap Details.
  2. In the Details dialog, select the category from the Category list.
  3. Tap OK to assign the document to the category you selected or tap Cancel to cancel the change.
Note: If you opened the document using the Open File command in the Tools menu of the document list view, then you can not assign a category to the document using the Details dialog.

document list view

To categorize a listed document, follow these steps:
  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Categorize to enter categorize mode.
  3. Tap the entry of the document you want to categorize.
  4. Tap the category to which you want to assign the document using the category list that pops up in the upper right.
If the current category is not All and you change a document's category, the entry of the document disappears from the currently listed documents, indicating that the document is no longer in the current category. If you switch to the category to which you moved the document, you will see that it has moved to that new category.

beam a document

RediReader™ can use the infrared port on your handheld to beam a document to another Palm OS® handheld with an infrared port. The receiving handheld does not need to have RediReader™ installed to receive the document.

You can only beam documents shown in RediReader™'s document list, but you can beam both documents located in your handheld's internal memory as well as documents located on mounted external memory cards.

You need to be in the document list view to beam a document. If you are reading a document, close it so that you go to the document list view, then follow these steps:

  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Beam to enter beam mode.
  3. Align the receiving handheld's infrared port with the sending handheld's infrared port.
  4. In the document list, tap the entry of the document you want to beam.
  5. RediReader™ presents a dialog showing that it is beaming the document. You can tap Cancel to cancel beaming of the document at any time.
The receiving handheld receives the document into its internal memory. You can not specify any other destination, such as an external memory card, for the document on the receiving handheld.

delete a document

When you no longer need a document, you can delete it in one of two ways depending on whether you are viewing the document or not.

delete the document you are reading

If you want to delete the document you are currently viewing, follow these steps:
  1. From the Edit menu, tap Details.
  2. In the Details dialog, tap Delete.
  3. RediReader™ asks you to confirm that you want to delete the document.
  4. Tap Yes to confirm, in which case RediReader™ deletes the document and returns you to the document list view. Tap No to not delete the document, in which case you return to viewing the document.
Note: If you opened the document using the Open File command in the Tools menu of the document list view, then the Delete button is absent in the Details dialog.

document list view

To delete a listed document, follow these steps:
  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Delete to enter delete mode.
  3. Tap the entry of the document you want to delete.
  4. RediReader™ asks you to confirm that you want to delete the document.
  5. Tap Yes to confirm, in which case RediReader™ deletes the document and removes the document's entry from the list. Tap No to not delete the document.
Note: If the document you delete is on an external memory card and the memory card is not mounted, RediReader™ only deletes the entry from the document list. If the document is still on the memory card the next time you start RediReader™ with the card mounted, RediReader™ will add an entry for the document to the list.

rename a document

You need to be in the document list view to rename a document. If you are reading a document, close it so that you go to the document list view, then follow these steps:
  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Rename to enter rename mode.
  3. In the document list, tap the entry of the document you want to rename.
  4. RediReader™ presents the Rename Document dialog with the current name highlighted.
  5. You can modify the existing name or enter an entirely new one.
  6. Tap Rename to rename the document or Cancel to cancel renaming.
When you rename a document located internally, the database's name changes. When you rename a document located on an external memory card, the document's file name changes. For documents located on external memory cards, the file name is what appears in the document list.

copy a document

If your device has support for external memory cards accessible using VFS, you can use RediReader™ to copy a document from your handheld's internal memory to a mounted external memory card, from a mounted external memory card to your handheld's internal memory, or from one mounted external memory card to another mounted external memory card. The last option is only available for devices that support two or more simultaneously mounted external memory cards.

The document you want to copy must have an entry in the document list. This means that it must originally be in one of the standard locations.

You need to be in the document list view to copy a document. If you are reading a document, close it so that you go to the document list view, then follow these steps:

  1. Tap the document list mode popup list trigger in the lower left.
  2. In the mode list, tap Copy to enter copy mode.
  3. In the document list, tap the entry of the document you want to copy.
  4. RediReader™ presents the Copy File dialog. The dialog shows the title of the document, its size, and its location.
  5. Make a selection in the Destination field. If the document is currently in your handheld's internal memory, the field initially shows the destination as being the "/Palm/Programs/RediReader" folder on the first found mounted external memory card. If the document is currently on an external memory card, the field initially shwos the destination as being the handheld.
  6. If you want the original document deleted after the copy completes, check Delete original after copy.
  7. Tap Copy to begin the copy or Cancel to copy the operation.
While RediReader™ copies the document, it shows the progress of the copy. You can cancel the copy in progress by tapping the Cancel button.

If you have documents on an external memory card that you want to use exclusively with RediReader™, then you are recommended to place those documents in the "/Palm/Programs/RediReader" folder so as not to burden other folders such as the "/Palm/Launcher" folder.

Note that you can use RediReader™ only to copy documents to and from the standard locations.

search multiple documents

RediReader™ does not integrate with the global find of the Palm OS®. However, you can perform a global search through all listed documents in any single category or all categories within RediReader™. RediReader™ searches through documents both in your handheld's internal memory and on mounted external memory cards.

Follow these steps to perform a global search:

  1. If you are reading a document, close it so that you go to the document list view.
  2. Select the category of the documents you want to search. Use the All category to search through all listed documents.
  3. In the Tools menu, tap Find.
  4. In the Find field, enter the text you want to find.
  5. Check Match case if you want an exact match or uncheck it if you want to search for a caseless match.
  6. Tap Find to begin the search or Cancel to cancel.

RediReader™ presents the RediReader Global Search dialog to inform you of the search progress. In the lower right, the dialog shows the percentage completion of the search through the current document, whose title is the last line listed on the screen that has the solid horizontal lines to either side of it.

For each found occurrence of the text to search, RediReader™ adds a line to the display along with some content before and after the found occurrence so that you can have a rough idea of the context of the occurrence. At any time, you can tap on one of these lines to immediately jump to the point in the document where the occurrence was found.

If the screen fills all the way to the bottom, RediReader™ pauses the search so that you can decide whether you want to go to any of the listed occurrences. If you want to continue searching for subsequent occurrences, tap More. You can tap Cancel to completely exit the search at this point as well.

While RediReader™ searches a given document, you can tap Next to tell RediReader™ to stop searching it and move on to the next document.

At any time, you can tap Stop to pause the search. If you do so, two new buttons replace the Stop and Next buttons. Tap Cancel to completely exit the global search or tap More to continue the search from where it left off when you tapped Stop.
