Tools menu

Find

Use Find on the Tools menu to activate the Global Find dialog to perform a global search through the current category of listed documents. The Global Find dialog has the following fields:
  • Find: Enter the text you want to find.
  • Match case: Check the Match case checkbox if you want the search to be case-sensitive (e.g., match case). Uncheck to make the search case-insensitive (e.g., ignore case).
In the Global Find dialog, tap the Find button to start the search or tap the Cancel button to dismiss the Find dialog without starting the search.

Open File

Use Open File on the Tools menu to activate the Open File dialog to open a file located in any folder on a VFS accessible memory expansion card. The Open File dialog has the following fields:
  • Volume: Select the volume containing the file you want to open.
  • Folder: This field shows the current folder name. Tap the pop up trigger to display the hierarchical list of folders leading to the current folder. Tap on any folder name in the popup list to display the contents of that folder. To the left of the Folder label is an up arrow that you can use to easily change the folder to the one above the current folder.
The list below the Volume and Folder fields display the files and folders in the current folder. Folders have a folder icon to the left of them and files have a file icon to the left of them. Tap a folder entry to display the contents of that folder or tap a file entry to open the file.

You can exit the Open File dialog without opening a file by tapping the Cancel button.

In addition to being able to see the files and folders on VFS accessible memory expansion cards, you can create a folder by tapping on the Create Folder button. This activates the Create Folder dialog, where you can enter the path of a folder and then tap Create to create the folder.

Delete All

Use Delete All on the Tools menu to delete all listed documents in the current category. RediReader™ asks for confirmation before deleting the documents. If a document to be deleted is on a VFS accessible memory expansion card that is not present, only the entry for the document is deleted from the list. The next time you start RediReader™ with the card present, the document will reappear in the list.

Refresh List

Use Refresh List on the Tools menu to manually force a refresh of the document list. Normally, you will only need to do this if you have set the
Refresh option to Manual and have either installed a new document or have deleted a document by some means outside of RediReader™.

When you use this command, RediReader™ deletes entries of documents it can not find and adds entries for new documents it finds.

Synchronize List

Use Synchronize List on the Tools menu to manually force a synchronization of the document list with the documents located in the internal memory of your handheld and currently mounted external memory cards.

When you use this command, RediReader™ first goes through the list and removes entries of external documents it can not find. External documents are those located on external memory cards. In the process of doing so, any settings and local bookmarks for those documents are removed as well. Then RediReader™ synchronizes the document list with the documents it finds in the internal memory of your handheld and on currently mounted external memory cards.

Every time you start RediReader™, it automatically synchronizes the document list for internal documents and adds entries to the document list for new external documents. However, when working with external memory cards, there may be situations when RediReader™'s automatic document list sychronization behavior is not sufficient to account for operations you may perform outside of it.

Generally, you will only use the Synchronize List command if you only use one memory card and you want to keep the document list synchronized with it. Here is a list of some of the situations where you may want to use the Synchronize List command:

  • You have given an external memory card a new volume name:
In this case, the existing entries in the document list for the documents on that card store the previous volume name. So whenever you try to open one of these documents, RediReader™ asks you to insert the card with the old name. You can use Synchronize List to remove the existing stale entries that use the old volume name.
  • You have used a file manager utility to rename one or more documents:
In this case, when you start RediReader™ after performing the rename, RediReader™ adds new entries to the document list for the renamed documents but the old entries still remain. You can use Synchronize List to remove the old entries.
  • You have used a file manager utility to delete one or more documents:
RediReader™ does not automatically delete entries of missing external documents from the document list since it is possible that the entries refer to documents on a physically different external memory card but one with the same volume name. You can use Synchronize List to remove the entries of the deleted documents.

If you utilize multiple memory cards, then you will likely not want to use the Synchronize List command since it removes entries of external documents not found on any mounted external memory cards. As a consequence of this, you lose settings and local bookmarks for those entries. In this case, you will want to manually delete entries from the document list.

System Information

Use System Information on the Tools menu to activate the System Information dialog so that you can determine the user ID you need to provide in order to obtain a registration code for a document that requires a registration code. The user ID is provided in the User ID field.

The dialog also shows the amount of free internal memory and the total amount of internal memory. Dynamic memory is the working memory that a running program has available for direct use while storage memory is the memory used for database storage.

Font Manager

Use Font Manager on the Tools menu to activate the Font Silo Font Manager dialog so that you can view fonts you have installed and delete individual font databases. If you do not have the Font Silo™ component installed or you have not installed any fonts, then instead of the dialog appearing, you gets a message informing you that you need to install both Font Silo™ and at least one font to use the font manager.

In the Font drop-down list, select the font to preview or delete. You can change the Size and Style fields to see how the selected font appears at different sizes and with different styles. For more on how Font Silo™ renders a font in a given size and style, see size and style rendering.

The Preview pane of the dialog allows you to see either the name of the font or the available characters rendered using the currently selected font. Tap Name to see the name rendered in the font. Tap Chars to see the characters. If the text spans wider than the width of the preview pane, use the left and right arrowheads that appear to the upper right of the preview pane to scroll the text left and right, respectively.

To delete the database containing the currently selected font, tap Delete Font. You will be asked for confirmation before the database is deleted.

When you are done previewing and/or deleting fonts, tap Done to exit the dialog.

information

In information mode, you can tap on a document entry to view information about the document in the Document Information dialog that RediReader™ presents. The dialog shows the title or file name of the document in bold at the top. Below it is the creation date and time of the document. Next come the Type and Size fields which show the document type and size, respectively. Following those fields, the Location field shows whether the document is located in the handheld's internal memory or on an external memory card, in which case, the Location field shows the volume name and path to the document file. At the end, the Text Encoding field shows the encoding of the document's text or Unknown if it is not known. The encoding of a document's text determines how individual characters are represented and what characters can be represented.

copy

In copy mode, you can tap on a document entry to copy the document internally or externally.

more about the document list

The document list is a list of documents found in
standard locations. The behavior of the list depends on settings you make in the Document List Options dialog and on the internal/external state of documents. For the purposes of this section, an internal document means a document stored in the handheld's internal memory and an external document means a document stored on a VFS accessible memory expansion card.

document list database

RediReader™ creates a database internally on the handheld to manage the document list. The database stores the following information for each listed document:
  • name: For internal documents, the name is the document database's name, also known as its title. For external documents, the document name is the document's file name including its extension.
  • location: The location tells RediReader™ whether the document is internal or external and if it is external, the volume name of the expansion card on which it resides and the path of the folder containing it.
  • document settings: The document settings include such information as the jump history, last viewed location, and local bookmarks for the document.
  • list settings: The document's list settings include such information as the document's category, privacy setting, and sort order.
The name and location information uniquely identify each document, assuming that each expansion card used has a unique volume name.

internal documents

Internal documents are normally always accessible to RediReader™ and so RediReader™ can easily synchronize the document list with the documents stored internally on the handheld. In other words, if you delete a document from your handheld either through RediReader™ or through some other means, RediReader™ removes the entry for the document's entry from its list automatically.

external documents

External documents reside on VFS accessible memory expansion cards. These cards are removeable media, so you can have more than one such card, storing different files or documents on each. Whenever you start RediReader™, RediReader™ searches the handheld's internal memory and the standard folders on mounted VFS accessible memory expansion cards for new documents.

In contrast to the behavior with internal documents, RediReader™ never removes entries of external documents from the document list if you delete the documents using a means other than through RediReader™. The reason for this is because it is a very likely scenario that you might insert, use, and remove two physically different cards both unnamed (maybe one is from a friend) and with different sets of documents. If RediReader™ automatically deleted entries from the document list of documents it was unable to locate (e.g., documents on a removed card), then you would lose the document and list settings for those entries.

document types to list

The Document List Options dialog has a field where you can specify what document types to list. The setting has a different behavior depending on where the document is located.

For internal documents, the Document types to list settings, other than the setting for the Other document type, determine whether or not documents of the checked types have entries in the document list. If you uncheck a document type and tap OK, RediReader™ resynchronizes the list to remove entries of internal documents of the unchecked type.

For external documents, the Document types to list settings only affect new documents that RediReader™ finds on VFS accessible memory expansion cards. If you uncheck a document type and tap OK, RediReader™ resynchronizes the list to remove entries of internal documents of the unchecked type, but does not remove entries of external documents. This is because if the document is not on a mounted volume, RediReader™ can not verify its document type.

the Other document type

The Document List Options dialog lists Other as one of the document types to list choices. The Other type refers to files not in any of the standard document type formats and only affects the inclusion of files into the document list located in the "/Palm/Programs/RediReader" folder on VFS accessible memory expansion cards. If you want plain text files located in the "/Palm/Programs/RediReader" folder added to the document list, then you need to check the Other option in the dialog.

standard locations

Whenever you start RediReader™, RediReader™ searches the standard locations for newly installed documents. The standard locations are:
  • handheld memory: The handheld memory is the internal non-removeable working memory of your handheld device.
  • /Palm/Programs/RediReader: On VFS accessible memory expansion cards, it is strongly recommended that you place into this folder documents that you want to view with RediReader™.
  • /Palm/Launcher: This is the folder the Application Launcher searches for applications on VFS accessible memory expansion cards. RediReader™ searches this folder for documents as well, but you are strongly recommended not to place documents here so that the Application Launcher does not need to unnecessarily wade through them when searching for applications.
  • /Palm/Programs/MSFiles: This is the default folder used for storage on Memory Stick® media by the MS Gate program on Sony CLIÉ handhelds.

document types

RediReader™ provides direct support for a set of standard document types and a catchall for textually viewing the content of any other document type, useful for viewing plain text files.

standard document types

  • RediReader™ 3.x: The RediReader™ 3.x format, newly supported by RediReader™ 3.0, adds color, table, and other advanced capabilities to documents.
  • RediReader™ 1.x/2.x: The RediReader™ 2.x format added image, hyperlinking, and formatted text capabilities to the high compression capabilities provided by the RediReader™ 1.x format.
  • Palm Doc: A popular compressed plain text format supported by most document readers.

catchall document type

You can use RediReader™ to open any file for viewing on VFS accessible memory cards. This is generally only useful for files in a plain text format as RediReader presents the content textually. If the format of the content is binary or a mix of text and binary, then you may see gibberish.
