Note: If you used the Open File command from the Tools menu of the document list view to open the document, the Details dialog does not have either the Category or the Private fields since these fields only apply to the document list entries. Also, the Delete button is absent.

Document Information

Use Document Information on the Edit menu to activate the Document Information dialog. This dialog shows the same information as the dialog that you can access from the document list view in information mode.

If the creator of the document added title, author, and publisher information to the document, then tap More to view this information. Tap the individual Title, Author, and Publisher pushbuttons along the top to view the corresponding information. If the document does not have the corresponding information, the dialog displays "No information" to indicate this.

Marks menu

Mark Location

Use Mark Location on the Marks menu to mark the current location using an
unnamed mark. Only one unnamed mark can be set per document. This contrasts with named bookmarks. You can use the unnamed mark to easily mark the current location and return to it at any time later.

Jump To Mark

Use Jump To Mark on the Marks menu to jump to the
unnamed mark.

Add Bookmark

Use Add Bookmark on the Marks menu to activate the Add Bookmark dialog to set a named bookmark at the current location. The Add Bookmark dialog has the following fields:

Tap Add to assign the bookmark. Tap Cancel to not add the bookmark.

If you add a bookmark and it has the same name as an existing bookmark in the document, RediReader™ asks whether you want to replace the existing bookmark. Tap Yes to replace the existing bookmark with the new location. Tap No to not replace the existing bookmark.

Edit Bookmarks

Use Edit Bookmarks on the Marks menu to activate the Edit Bookmarks dialog to perform any of the operations described below. In the Edit Bookmarks dialog, you can select the bookmark type on to which to perform the operations by selecting from the Type popup list.
  • Rename a bookmark: To rename a bookmark, perform these steps:

    2. Before deleting the bookmarks, RediReader™ asks you to confirm that you do indeed want to delete them.
    3. Tap Yes to proceed with the deletion or tap No to not delete the bookmarks.
  • Sort the bookmarks alphabetically: To sort all bookmarks of the current type alphabetically, perform these steps:
    1. Tap Alphabetize.
    2. Before performing the sort, RediReader™ informs you that the current bookmark sort order will be lost and asks you to confirm that you do indeed want to alphabetize the bookmarks.
    3. Tap Yes to proceed with the sort or tap Cancel to not sort.
  • Move a bookmark to another position in the list: To move a bookmark to another position in the list, perform these steps:
    1. Hold the stylus down on the bookmark's name.
    2. Drag the stylus. A horizontal bar appears when you drag outside the bounds of the name.
    3. Drag the stylus to position the horizontal bar in the position where you want the bookmark to move.
    4. Release the stylus when the bar is in the desired position.

jump history.

Tools menu

Autoscroll

Use Autoscroll on the Tools menu to start autoscroll mode. In autoscroll mode, the page automatically scrolls down at an adjustable constant speed.

While autoscrolling, you can set the autoscroll speed to any of 20 levels. To increase the speed, press the hardware down button. To decrease the speed, press the hardware up button. If your device has a jog wheel or jog dial, rotate down to increase the speed and rotate up to decrease the speed. Each increment increases the speed by one third.

Performing any action other than increasing or decreasing the autoscroll speed stops autoscrolling. The easiest way to stop autoscrolling without performing any other action simultaneously is to tap on an inactive area of the screen.

If you use autoscroll often while holding your device in one hand, you may want to consider mapping one of the hardware buttons to the autoscroll action. Pressing such a mapped button starts autoscrolling while pressing it again stops autoscrolling, providing a convenient way for starting and stopping/pausing autoscrolling.

By default, autoscroll uses smooth scrolling. See Scroll options to change the autoscroll mode so that it scrolls a line at a time.

Full Screen

Use Full Screen on the Tools menu to activate full screen mode so that the content display uses the entire screen. In addition to using the menu command to activate full screen mode, you can also assign a button to activate full screen mode.

In full screen mode, the title bar, scroll bar, and tool bar are hidden. If the menu silk screen icon is available, you can still use it to access the menu bar. You can tap in the lower left or lower right corner to temporarily activate the tool bar. When you exit full screen mode, the title bar, scroll bar, and tool bar return to the hidden or shown state they were in before you entered full screen mode.

If you are in full screen mode, you can exit the mode in one or more of the following ways:

  • Use a button to which you have assigned the full screen action
  • Use any button not assigned to any action (e.g., a button whose assignment is the default), aside from the Aux/Back button.
  • Push the jog dial or jog wheel, if available on the device, and if all buttons are assigned to actions other than the full screen action
  • Use Full Screen on the Tools menu
  • Use Graffiti® to enter the Command stroke then the letter 'f'.

System Information

Use System Information on the Tools menu to activate the System Information dialog so that you can determine the user ID you need to provide in order to obtain a registration code for a document that requires a registration code. The user ID is provided in the User ID field.

The dialog also shows the amount of free internal memory and the total amount of internal memory. Dynamic memory is the working memory that a running program has available for direct use while storage memory is the memory used for database storage.

Options menu

Display

Use Display on the Options menu to activate the Display Options dialog to change display options. The Display Options dialog has the following fields:
  • Layout: Select one of the following for content layout:
  • Text: Select one of the following for the display of text:
    • Normal: Display text normally.
    • Align right: Force text that normally aligns to the left to align to the right.
  • Images: Select one of the following for the display of images:
    • Normal: Display images normally.
    • Double dimensions: Double the width and height of images. This option requires a device having a high-density screen and supporting the high-density API.
  • Encoding: The encoding of a document's text determines how individual characters are represented and what characters can be represented.

If the document does not specify its encoding, you can manually specify the encoding of the document's text from the following supported encodings:

    • UTF-8: Unicode
    • GB2312: Simplified Chinese
    • GB18030: Simplified Chinese
    • Big5: Traditional Chinese
    • EUC-JP: Japanese
    • Shift-JIS: Japanese
    • EUC-KR: Korean
    • windows-1250: Central European
    • windows-1251: Cyrillic
    • windows-1252: Western European
    • windows-1253: Greek
    • windows-1254: Turkish
    • windows-1255: Vietnamese
    • windows-1256: Arabic
    • windows-1257: Baltic
    • windows-1258: Vietnamese
    • KOI8-R: Cyrillic

For a document that does not specify its encoding, RediReader™ assumes the windows-1252 Western European encoding. Only documents in RediReader™ 4.x document format have the ability to specify their own encoding, which would have been specified at conversion time.

If the document does specify its encoding, then this field shows Document specified and you can not manually specify a different encoding. You can determine the document's encoding through the Document Information dialog.

Note that proper support for the display of text in the chosen encoding is necessary from the operating system or a third party program that adds such support in order for RediReader™ to display the text. Most systems support at least the windows-1252 Western European encoding. See Font Silo™: supported text encodings for more information on using Font Silo™ with various text encodings.

  • Also set as defaults: Check this checkbox if you also want the Layout, Text, Images, and Encoding settings to be the default settings given to documents you newly open in the future.
  • Color: Select the desired color display mode. The available color display modes are system dependent. You can use this option to see how a document looks at different color depths. The color depth also affects the display speed.
  • Mode: Select the desired screen mode. The availability of more than one screen mode is system dependent.

Tap OK to accept any changes you make or tap Cancel to cancel the changes.

Please note the following:

  • Settings you make in the Display Options dialog only affect the current document.
  • If you check the Also set as defaults checkbox, future documents that you have not yet opened also get these settings as their default display option settings.
  • Documents currently in the document list which you have already opened in the past retain their existing settings and are not affected even if you check the Also set as defaults checkbox.
  • The Color and Mode settings apply only to the current document. You can not set defaults for these options. The initial color display mode is determined by the document content as described in behind the scenes.

Font

Use Font on the Options menu to activate the Font Options dialog to change font options. The Font Options dialog has the following fields:
  • Default: Documents that do not have font specifications for the content such as plain text documents and documents in the Palm Doc format use the font selected for this field.
  • Sans Serif: Text tagged to be displayed with a font having plain endings (e.g., no finishing strokes, nor flared or tapered ends) use the font selected for this field. Examples of such fonts are Arial and Tahoma.
  • Serif: Text tagged to be displayed with a font with finishing strokes, or flared or tapered ends use the font selected for this field. Examples of such fonts are Times New Roman and Garamond.
  • Monospace: Text tagged to be displayed with a fixed-width font (e.g., each character has the same width) display with the font selected for this field.
  • Size: Select the desired text display size. RediReader™ can interpret the size in either of two ways:
    • Relative: Text displays in a size relative to the selected size, so you can select larger to make all text relatively larger or select smaller to make all text relatively smaller.
    • Absolute: All text displays in the selected size regardless of the font sizes specified in the document.
  • Bold: Check this field to have all text display in bold.
  • Also set as defaults: Check this checkbox if you also want the settings to be the default settings given to documents you newly open in the future.

Tap OK to accept any changes you make or tap Cancel to cancel the changes.

Please note the following:

  • Settings you make in the Font Options dialog only affect the current document.
  • If you check the Also set as defaults checkbox, future documents that you have not yet opened also get these settings as their default display option settings.
  • Documents currently in the document list which you have already opened in the past retain their existing settings and are not affected even if you check the Also set as defaults checkbox.
  • If you select Use defaults for a font option (e.g., any of Default, Sans Serif, Serif, Monospace), then the font chosen depends on whether or not you have set specific default fonts:
    • If you have set specific fonts by checking Also set as default at some time previous, then the fonts that you selected when you last checked Also set as defaults will be used.
    • If you have never set specific fonts by checking Also set as default or if the default setting for the font option is Use defaults, then if Font Silo™ is installed and at least one Font Silo™ font is installed, then Font Silo™ attempts to choose an appropriate font among the installed Font Silo™ fonts for the corresponding font option. Otherwise, the device font is used.

Interface

Use Interface on the Options menu to activate the Interface Options dialog to change user interface options. The Interface Options dialog has the following fields:
  • Title bar: Select one of the following for the title bar:
    • Show: Display the title bar.
    • Hide: Do not display the title bar.
  • Scroll bar: Select one of the following for the scroll bar:
    • None: Do not display the scroll bar.
    • Left: Place the scroll bar on the left.
    • Right: Place the scroll bar on the right.
  • Tool bar: Select one of the following for the tool bar:
    • Show: Display the tool bar.
    • Hide: Do not display the tool bar. When the tool bar is hidden, you can activate it temporarily by tapping on the lower right of the screen. When you do so, the tool bar appears allowing you to tap on an icon. To cancel the tool bar, tap anywhere outside the tool bar.
  • Location: Select one of the following for the location indicator that is on the right end of the tool bar:
    • Automatic: If the document has no more than two pages, display the percentage location within the current page. Otherwise, if the document has three or more pages, display the current page number.
    • Page: Display the current page number.
    • Percentage: Display the percentage location within the current page.
  • Also set as defaults: Check this checkbox if you also want the settings to be the default settings given to documents you newly open in the future.

Tap OK to accept any changes you make or tap Cancel to cancel the changes.

Note: Settings you make in the Interface Options dialog only affect the current document. If you check the Also set as defaults checkbox, future documents that you have not yet opened also get these settings as their default interface options settings. Documents currently in the document list which you have already opened in the past retain their existing settings.

Scroll

Use Scroll on the Options menu to activate the Scroll Options dialog to change scroll behavior. The Scroll Options dialog has the following fields:
  • Smooth: Check the scroll checkbox to enable the scrolling transition effect. Uncheck the checkbox to disable the effect. Disabling the effect will increase the scroll speed. Check the autoscroll checkbox to enable smooth scrolling during autoscroll. Uncheck the checkbox to have autoscroll scroll a whole line at a time.
  • Screen up/down behavior: These settings determine the behavior of the Screen up and Screen down scroll actions. The possible behaviors are:
    • Full with text align: When performing a scroll up, if the current first line is partially displayed, the bottom of it aligns with the bottom of the screen after the scroll so that it becomes fully displayed as the last line. When performing a scroll down, if the current last line is partially displayed, the top of it aligns with the top of the screen after the scroll so that it becomes fully displayed as the first line.
    • Full screen: Scroll the screen by its entire height.
    • 90% of the screen: Scroll the screen by 90% of its height. This provides a 10% overlap of content from one screen to the next, useful for providing context from one screen to the next.
    • Half screen: Scroll the screen by half its height.
The Screen up and Screen down scroll actions can be selected for the hardware up and down buttons, the jog wheel, and the tap regions.
  • Hardware button behavior: These settings determine the scroll actions of the hardware up and down buttons. However, if the up and down buttons have been assigned actions other than Default using the Button Options dialog, then the settings here for the hardware up and down buttons have no effect.
  • Jog wheel/dial behavior: These settings determine the scroll actions of the jog wheel for devices that have this feature.
Tap OK to accept any changes you make or tap Cancel to cancel the changes.

Region

Use Region on the Options menu to activate the Region Options dialog to change the behavior when you tap on the screen. The screen is divided into four tap regions. Each region's size and action when tapped upon is configurable. The left part of the Region Options dialog allows you to change the size of each region and the right side allows you to change the scroll behavior for each region when tapped.

Regions
A tap region can range in size from 10% to 70% of the total height used to display text. You can change the sizes of the regions by dragging up or down the horizontal lines that separate the regions.

While dragging a separator line, it appears as a dotted line until you release it. Dragging a single separator line only changes the division of space between the two regions that the line separates, so you may have to change the position of more than one separator line to get your desired region sizes.

Region Action
The region actions determine the scroll behavior when the region is tapped. These are the available actions:

Button

Use Button on the Options menu to activate the Button Options dialog to assign actions to the hardware buttons. In the Button field, select the button for which you want to view or modify the current assigned action. The following lists the buttons available in the Button field of the dialog, but note that not all devices have all the listed buttons:
  • Button 1: The leftmost hardware button normally mapped to the Date Book application.
  • Button 2: The hardware button second from the left and normally mapped to the Address application.
  • Button 3: The hardware button second from the right and normally mapped to the To Do List application.
  • Button 4: The rightmost hardware button normally mapped to the Memo Pad or Note Pad application.
  • Jog Push: If your device has a jog dial or jog wheel, this corresponds to pushing the jog dial or jog wheel. If your device has a directional navigator control, this corresponds to pushing Select on the control.
  • Aux/Back: The auxiliary or back button, normally located next to the jog dial or jog wheel. Not all devices have such a button. On the Tungsten™ T, this is the Voice Memo button.
  • Up: The hardware scroll up button. Note that if your device has a jog dial or jog wheel, then this does correspond to rotating the jog dial or jog wheel up. However, if your device has a directional navigator control, this corresponds to pressing Up on the control.
  • Down: The hardware scroll down button. Note that if your device has a jog dial or jog wheel, then this does correspond to rotating the jog dial or jog wheel down. However, if your device has a directional navigator control, this corresponds to pressing Down on the control.
  • Left: If your device has a directional navigator control, this corresponds to pressing Left on the control.
  • Right: If your device has a directional navigator control, this corresponds to pressing Right on the control.
Each button can be mapped to any of the following actions:

Note When the Up, Down, Left, and Right buttons have assigned actions of Default, they perform default scroll actions as described in the navigation section of this manual. So if you change the assigned action of any of those buttons, the corresponding buttons no longer have the default scroll behavior.

Rotate

Use Rotate on the Options menu to activate the Rotate dialog to change the screen orientation.

Note: The Rotate menu item appears only if the device has support for screen rotation (i.e., HandEra® 330).

About RediReader

tool bar

The tool bar appears along the bottom of the screen with the following icons:

You can hide the tool bar by changing the interface options. When the tool bar is hidden, you can activate it temporarily by tapping in either the lower left or the lower right of the screen. When you do so, the tool bar appears allowing you to tap on an icon. To cancel the tool bar, tap anywhere outside the tool bar.

Close

Tap the Close icon to exit the current document and return to the document list view.

Copy Mode

Tap the Copy Mode icon to enter copy mode. When you are in copy mode, the Copy Mode icon has a frame around it to indicate this. You can exit copy mode by tapping on the icon again, in which case the frame around the icon disappears to indicate that you are no longer in copy mode.

Note: If the document has been set to prevent copy to clipboard operations, then the Copy Mode icon does not appear in the tool bar.

When in copy mode, you select the text you want to copy and then invoke the Copy command in the Edit menu. To select text for copying, drag the stylus across the range of text you want to copy. Text in the selected range appears highlighted to indicate the selection.

Also, while in copy mode, on-screen tap and drag scrolling do not work since you must drag across text on the screen to select it for copying. However, while dragging to select text, if you drag to the top or bottom edge, then the text automatically scrolls in the corresponding direction so that you can extend the selection range in that direction. You can still use the other methods for scrolling.

Find

Tap the Find icon to activate the Find dialog so that you can enter the text you want to find. The Find dialog has the following fields:
  • Find: Enter the text you want to find.
  • Match case: Check the Match case checkbox if you want the search to be case-sensitive (e.g., match case). Uncheck it to make the search case-insensitive (e.g., ignore case).
  • Entire document: Check the Entire document checkbox to search the entire document. Uncheck the checkbox to limit the search to the current page.
  • Range:: Select one of the following to specify the search direction and range:
    • Down: Search forward from the current location to the end of the document or page.
    • Up: Search backward from the current location to the top of the document or page.
    • Top to Bottom: Search forward from the top of the document to the end of the document or page.
In the Find dialog, tap the Find button to start the search or tap the Cancel button to dismiss the Find dialog without starting the search.

Find Again

Tap the Find Again icon to search for the next occurrence of the previously searched text. The search continues in the same direction as the previous search.

Note: If there was no previous search in the document in the current session, then the Find Again icon does not appear in the tool bar.

Bookmarks

Tap the Bookmarks icon to display a list of the document's named bookmarks. To jump to a bookmark, select it from the list. If there are more bookmarks than can be displayed at once, you can scroll through the list a screen at a time using the up and down arrows that appear along the right of the list. Tap outside of the list to dismiss the list without jumping to a bookmark.

Note: If the document has no named bookmarks defined, then the Bookmarks icon does not appear in the tool bar.

Back

Tap the Back icon to go to the previous location in the jump history.

Note: If there is no previous location in the jump history, then the Back icon does not appear in the tool bar.

Forward

Tap the Forward icon to go to the next location in the jump history.

Note: If there is no next location in the jump history, then the Forward icon does not appear in the tool bar.

Home

Tap the Home icon to go to the top of the home page of the document. If a home page was not specified when the document was converted or if the document format does not support a home page specification, then this results in a jump to the top of the first page of the document.

Previous Page

Tap the Previous Page icon to jump to the beginning of the previous page. Before actually jumping, RediReader™ adds the current location to the jump history.

Note: If the current page is page one, then the Previous Page icon does not appear in the tool bar.

Go To

The location indicator displays either the current page number or the current location within the page expressed as a percentage, depending on the interface options. Tap the indicator to activate the Go To dialog to do any of the following:
  • go to a specific page number: Enter a page number in the Page # field and then tap the Go To button to the left to go to that page.
  • see how many pages the document has: The dialog indicates this on the first line.
  • go to the first page: Tap the First Page button to go to page number one.
  • go to the last page: Tap the Last Page button to go to the last page of the document.
  • go to a percentage location within the page: Enter a percentage value in the % of page field and then tap the Go To button to the left to go to that percentage location.
  • go to the top of the page: Tap the Top of Page button to go the top of the page.
  • go to the end of the page: Tap the End of Page button to go to the end of the page.

Next Page

Tap the Next Page icon to jump to the beginning of the next page. Before actually jumping, RediReader™ adds the current location to the jump history.

Note: If the current page is the last page of the document, then the Next Page icon does not appear in the tool bar.
